In the English Premier League, Mile Jedinak played a full game in midfield as Crystal Palace won their first game back in the top flight, beating Sunderland 3-1. Jedinak again impressed in midfield with a dogged display but showed his attacking instincts by getting forward on several occasions and having decent shots from range, with one effort in the first half from outside of the box almost finding the top corner.

Elsewhere, Brad Jones was an unused substitute as Liverpool beat Manchester United 1-0.

In the Championship, Shane Lowry played a full game in defence as Millwall drew 1-1 with Brighton. Lowry’s desperate defending preserved a point with his goal-line clearance preventing a certain match winning goal from Will Buckley in second half stoppage time. Scott McDonald started and played 83 minutes and was widely viewed as the Lions best player in the clash, with the diminutive striker at the heart of Millwall’s best chances with his clever passing and movement.

Rhys Williams played a full game in defence as Middlesbrough drew 1-1 with Sheffield Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Adam Federici was an unused substitute as Reading beat Yeovil Town 1-0, while Alex Cisak was an unused substitute as Burnley beat Derby County 3-0.

In League One, Massimo Luongo scored for Swindon Town in their 5-0 hammering of Crewe Alexandra. Luongo, who has just penned a permanent deal at Swindon following a successful loan spell, struck in the first half through a stroke of luck, with his intended cross looping over the ‘keeper and into the back of the net. Bradden Inman started and played 70 minutes in the clash and looked Crewe’s most dangerous player on a dark afternoon for the Railwaymen.

Bailey Wright played a full game in defence as Preston North End beat Walsall 3-0, while James Meredith played a full game at left-back as Bradford City drew 1-1 with Stevenage.

Elsewhere, James Wesolowski started and played 62 minutes as Oldham Athletic lost 1-0 to Tranmere Rovers, while Neil Kilkenny was absent from the match-day squad as Bristol City drew 1-1 with Gillingham.

In League Two, Aaron Downes played a full game in defence as Torquay United played out a 0-0 draw with Hartlepool.

In the UEFA Super Cup, Mark Schwarzer was an unused substitute as Chelsea lost to Bayern Munich 5-4 on penalties after the game had finished 2-2 after extra time.

In the German Bundesliga, Robbie Kruse was a 71st minute substitute as Bayer Leverkusen lost 2-0 to Schalke. Kruse had some decent moments in his short spell on the pitch with a mazy run at pace down the right wing the highlight.

In Belgium, Mat Ryan played a full game in goal as Club Brugge beat RS Waasland-Beveren 2-1. Ryan made a couple of decent saves late in the first half to deny Ivan Trickovski and Dalibor Veselinovic before conceding in the dying moments of the contest with Siebe Blondelle’s header beating Ryan in goal.

In Austria, James Holland started and played 75 minutes as Austria Wien drew 1-1 with Wacker Innsbruck.

In Russia, Luke Wilkshire played a full game at right-back as Dinamo Moscow drew 1-1 with FK Rostov.

In Turkey, Kerem Bulut was an unused substitute as Akhisar Belediyespor beat Trabzonspor 3-0.

In the MLS, Tim Cahill scored his eighth goal of the season as the New York Red Bulls beat DC United 2-1. Cahill, who provided the assist for Lloyd Sam’s opener on 8 minutes, rose highest to nod home Jonny Steele’s cross on 38 minutes to give his side a 2-1 lead. David Carney played his first game since August last year, playing a full game at left-back in the clash. Carney was at fault for DC United’s equaliser on 34 minutes, over committing and losing his footing leaving a simple finish for Nick DeLeon.

In Japan, Lucas Neill played a full game in defence and put in a strong performance as Omiya Ardija beat Yokohama F.Marinos 1-0.

Elsewhere, Josh Kennedy played a full game as Nagoya Grampus drew 1-1 with Sagan Tosu.

In South Korea, Alex Wilkinson played a full game in defence as Jeonbuk Motors continued their remarkable form with a 2-0 win over Incheon United.

Adrian Madaschi played a full game as Jeju United beat Daejeon Citizen 2-1. After not seeing game-time for over three months, Madaschi has started the past two games for Jeju following the sale of regular centre half Hong Jeong-Ho to German club FC Augsburg.

Jonas Salley played a full game in defence for Guizhou and nearly gifted a late winner for Dalian with an under-hit back-pass but the tough defender recovered to clear the ball for his side.

Elsewhere, Eddy Bosnar played a full game in defence as Guangzhou R&F played out a 0-0 draw with Jiangsu Sainty. Bosnar was somehow denied from close range in the first half by a superb save from Jiangsu ‘keeper Guan Zhen. Rostyn Griffiths was a 48th minute substitute in the clash and almost scored a freak winner with his deflected cross striking the crossbar just moments after coming on.
