WITH the resumption of leagues around the world following the international break, our Swiss based Aussies showed no signs of a hangover after missing selection for the recent Socceroos clash against Brazil with impressive performances in the cup. Elsewhere, Sasa Ognenovski and Shane Lowry saw red, while Brett Holman made his debut in the UAE.
In the English Premier League, Mile Jedinak played a full game in midfield as 10-man Crystal Palace lost 2-0 to reigning champions Manchester United. Jedinak was typically strong in his holding midfield role but had mixed success with his passing, with the combative midfielder picking out Dwight Gayle with a superb pass which the striker dinked over ‘keeper David De Gea, only for his shot to fall just wide of the target. Only moments later, Jedinak’s errant pass sold team-mate Kagisho Dikgacoi into trouble with the South African midfielder fouling Ashley Young, conceding a penalty and seeing red for his challenge.
Mark Schwarzer was an unused substitute as Chelsea lost 1-0 to Everton, while Chris Herd was absent from the match-day squad as Aston Villa lost 2-1 to Newcastle.
In the Championship, Rhys Williams played a full game in defence as Middlesbrough lost 3-1 to Ipswich Town.
Shane Lowry was sent off as Millwall copped a 5-1 hammering from Derby County. Lowry was sent off for a high challenge on young Rams star Will Hughes to cap off a miserable day for the Lions, who dropped to the bottom of the table. Scott McDonald played a full game but had little impact in a side that created precious little.
Elsewhere, Adam Federici was an unused substitute as Reading played out a 0-0 draw with Brighton, while Alex Cisak was an unused substitute as Burnley drew 1-1 with local rivals Blackburn.
In League One, James Meredith played a full game as Bradford City drew 2-2 with Colchester United. Meredith provided an assist for Bradford’s equaliser on 52 minutes, with his with cross finding Nahki Wells who nodded home his second of the game.
Bailey Wright played a full game in defence as Preston North End beat Stevenage 3-0.Wright was involved with a superb team goal in the second half, winning the ball in defence and starting the move which culminated in former Premier League striker Kevin Davies lashing home a goal.
Bradden Inman played a full game in midfield as Crewe Alexandra lost 3-0 to Walsall, while Massimo Luongo played a full game as Swindon Town lost 3-2 to Wolverhampton. Luongo provided an assist for his side’s first goal in the final 10 minutes, showing plenty of class with a delicate chip over the Wolves defence finding Dany N’Guessan who fired the ball home.
Elsewhere, James Wesolowski was a half time substitute as Oldham Athletic lost 3-2 to Rotherham United, while Neil Kilkenny was absent from the match-day squad as Bristol City lost 3-0 to Peterborough United.
In League Two, Aaron Downes played a full game in defence as Torquay United lost 1-0 to Rochdale.
Ryan Williams was a 74th minute substitute as Oxford United drew 2-2 with Cheltenham Town.
In the Scottish Premier League, Tom Rogic was an unused substitute as Celtic beat Hearts 3-1. Dylan McGowan played a full game at right-back for Hearts in the clash.

In the Dutch Eredivisie, Jason Davidson played a full game in defence as Heracles lost 2-0 to SC Cambuur. Davidson scored an unfortunate own goal in the closing moments of the contest with Marcel Ritzmaier’s shot deflecting off Davidson and into the back of the net.
Tommy Oar started and played 64 minutes as FC Utrecht beat RKC Waalwijk 2-1. Oar, playing on the left of a midfield diamond, failed to make much of an impact on the game but it was his pressure which led to a turnover allowing Steve de Ridder to score his second goal on 40 minutes. Adam Sarota missed the clash through injury.
Eli Babalj was absent from the match-day squad as AZ Alkmaar beat Go Ahead Eagles 3-0.
In the Dutch Second Division, Travis Cooper was an unused substitute as VVV Venlo copped a 4-0 thrashing from De Graafschap.
In the Belgian Pro League, Mat Ryan played a full game in goal as Club Brugge beat Lierse SK 4-1.
In Austria, James Holland started and played 69 minutes in midfield as Austria Wien suffered a shock 3-2 loss to SV Grodig.

Elsewhere, Dario Vidosic provided an assist as FC Sion progressed through to the round of 16 with a 1-0 win over FC Wohlen. Vidosic whipped in a free-kick on 22 minutes which was headed home by Hungarian defender Vilmos Vanczak.
