In the MLS, Tim Cahill created history with a stunning goal after just eight seconds as the New York Red Bulls beat Houston Dynamo 3-0. Cahill, playing in an advanced role alongside Thierry Henry, controlled Dax McCarthy’s lofted pass with his chest before firing a bullet into the top corner from outside the box. David Carney was absent from the Red Bulls match-day squad.  

In the German Bundesliga, Robbie Kruse was an 80th minute substitute as Bayer Leverkusen beat Hoffenheim 2-1 in a game that will be forever remembered for the ‘phantom goal’ scored by Leverkusen striker Stefan Kiessling.  

Elsewhere, Mitch Langerak was an unused substitute as Borussia Dortmund beat Hannover 96 1-0.

In the German Second Division, Mathew Leckie continued his excellent form with a goal in FSV Frankfurt’s 4-2 loss to SC Paderborn. Leckie opened the scoring on 22 minutes, timing his run into the box perfectly to meet Alexander Huber’s cross and steer the ball past Lukas Kruse following a clever dummy. Nikita Rukavytsya was a 69th minute substitute in the clash and had an opportunity late in the contest but the former Perth Glory speedster blasted his effort over the bar.

Elsewhere, Ben Halloran was an unused substitute as Fortuna Dusseldorf beat FC Ingolstadt 2-1.

In the German Third Division, Mustafa Amini started and played 66 minutes as Borussia Dortmund II copped a 4-0 thumping from Preuben Munster.

In the English Premier League, Mark Schwarzer was an unused substitute as Chelsea beat Cardiff City 4-1.

Elsewhere, Brad Jones was an unused substitute as Liverpool played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with Newcastle United, while Chris Herd was absent from the match-day squad as Aston Villa lost 2-0 to Tottenham.

In the Championship, Scott McDonald found the back of the net for Millwall in their 2-2 draw with high-flying Queens Park Rangers. Despite barely seeing any of the ball, McDonald popped up to score just after half time, capitalising on Liam Trotter’s superb pressure and cut-back to drive his precise effort past Rob Green. Shane Lowry was an unused substitute in the clash.

Adam Federici returned to the starting line-up for his first league appearance since April in Reading’s 4-1 win over Doncaster Rovers. Federici, who replaced the injured Alex McCarthy, was unlucky to concede in the first half after spectacularly saving Mark Duffy’s free kick, only for Theo Robinson to react quickest and rocket the ball home. Unfortunately for Federici, McCarthy is set to be fit for next week’s clash against Millwall.

Elsewhere, Rhys Williams was an unused substitute as Middlesbrough suffered a shock 3-2 loss to lowly Barnsley, while Alex Cisak was an unused substitute as Burnley remained top following a 1-0 win over Ipswich Town.

In League One, Massimo Luongo played a full game in midfield as Swindon Town continued their good form with a 2-0 win over Notts County.

Bailey Wright played a full game in defence as Preston North End returned to the winners list following a 2-1 win over Gillingham.

James Meredith played a full game at left-back as Bradford City lost 1-0 to Crawley Town.

In the Dutch Eredivisie, Jason Davidson played a full game at left-back as Heracles drew 1-1 with NEC Nijmegen. Despite being used predominately in the centre of defence this year, Davidson had an impressive game at left-back and it was his cross into the box which led to Heracles’ only goal of the contest.  

Tommy Oar was missing with a back problem as FC Utrecht beat NAC Breda 4-2. Adam Sarota was missing as he continues his recovery from a serious knee injury.

In the Dutch Second Division, Andrew Marveggio was an unused substitute as SC Telstar played out a 0-0 draw with Fortuna Sittard.

In the Italian Serie A, Carl Valeri remained out with an ankle injury as Sassuolo won their first game of the season, beating Bologna 2-1.

In Russia, Luke Wilkshire played a full game at right-back as Dinamo Moscow beat Kuban Krasnodar 3-1.

In Belgium, Mat Ryan played a full game in goal as 10-man Club Brugge lost 4-1 to KV Kortrijk. Ryan couldn’t do much with any of the goals but did make several excellent saves throughout the contest.

In Switzerland, Oliver Bozanic played a full game as FC Luzern drew 1-1 with BSC Young Boys. Bozanic had a golden chance from the penalty spot to seal victory for his side in the second half but the former Central Coast Mariners midfielder saw his effort saved by Marco Wolfli. The miss proved costly as Young Boys equalised in the 84th minute through Michael Frey.

Elsewhere, Dario Vidosic played a full game in midfield as FC Sion lost 1-0 to FC Thun.

In Austria, James Holland played a full game in midfield as Austria Wien played out a 1-1 draw with SV Ried.

In the Greek Super League, Dean Bouzanis was an unused substitute as FC Aris beat Veria FC 1-0.

In the Greek Second Division, Billy Konstantinidis scored a brace for Panserraikos in their 5-0 thumping of PAO Kosmio.

In South Korean FA Cup Final, Alex Wilkinson played a full game in defence as Jeonbuk Motors suffered a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Pohang Steelers after the game finished 1-1 after 120 minutes. Wilkinson did provide the assist for his side’s only goal, setting up Ki-Hee Kim in the first half.

In the UAE, Brett Holman played a full game in midfield as Al Nasr beat Emirates Club 3-0. Holman was heavily involved in his side’s third goal in second half stoppage time, inviting ‘keeper Abdullah Moosa Ali out of his area before playing the ball to Ali Hussian who curled a fine effort into the empty net.

Alex Brosque found the back of the net for Al Ain in their 5-2 win over Dubai Club. Brosque, who played 77 minutes in the clash, scored his side’s fourth goal on 70 minutes, receiving Omar Abdulrahman’s pass and finishing well past Jamal Abdallah.
