It was a comical win for Australia but a win nonetheless as the curtain is raised on the World Cup with a 2-1 win over Hungary.
Australia rode their luck in the first half with a one-on-one save and two goal line clearances. A few astute substitutions turned Australia around, most notably the introduction of Mile Jedinak who calmed the players down and added some extra steel in midfield.
Wonderkid Daniel Arzani turned the tide of the game, scoring his first international goal moments after coming on.
With minutes left Trent Sainsbury put the ball into his own net but Arzani's vision allowed Irvine to cross and let Hungary do the rest as another own goal handed the Socceroos the win.
Mathew Ryan - 6.5
Needed some quick reactions to stop a deflected volley from the Hungarians in the first half. Australia would have been one nil down was it not for a one-on-one stop against Adam Szalai.
Aziz Behich - 6
Didn't have many opportunities to dribble and get comfortable facing forward on his left flank. Had some more space to move in the first half although his delivery was poor.
Trent Sainsbury - 5
The victim of Australia's poor passing in the first half being made to run and expel energy chasing wayward balls. Not the best passing himself in the first half and looked lethargic. Was better in the second stanza before some devastating miscommunication saw him score an own goal.
Mark Milligan - 4.5
A clumsy giveaway sent Hungary through on the Australian goal and Mat Ryan saved his blushes. Not the level of passing you'd expect from the 71-time Socceroo.
Josh Risdon - 5.5
Caught out with balls in the air with the majority of Hungary's chances coming from Australia's right side. Having a torrid time with Sallai on the left hand side as Hungary created almost all of their chances from his poor defending.
Massimo Luongo - 5
Didn't do enough to get involved in play having less touches on the ball than usual.
Aaron Mooy - 6
Dispossessed a number of times and uncharacteristically gave the ball away as a result of his own poor passing and struggled to maintain comfortable ball movement. Much better in the second half next to Jedinak.
Tom Rogic - 5.5
Hardly saw the ball in the first half with Australia on the back foot and struggling to make their passes stick. Had some glimpses of his ability on the ball and looked more up for it in the second half.
Robbie Kruse - 5
Australia's first chance fell to the Socceroos only Queenslander as he volleyed and hit the bar first time from the cross despite him being offside. Couldn't provide much more after that and was substituted for Daniel Arzani.
Mathew Leckie - 6
Socceroos only avenue forward in a frustrating first half creating a chance for Robbie Kruse with a low cross into the box.
Andrew Nabbout - 5
Anonymous in the first half as Australia created little to no chances. Still uneasy about central play, it's clear Nabbout is best served as a winger or wide forward rather than an out and out number nine.
Substitutes
Tomi Juric - 5
A half-time substitute for Andrew Nabbout as van Maarwijk looked for a traditional target man to feed off the Socceroos delivery. He looked lively coming back from injury but was replaced again with ten minutes to go.
Brad Jones - 4
Australia's second choice came on for just his sixth cap at half-time for Mat Ryan. Some butter fingers early in the half letting a cross slip but saved a free-kick later on in the match. Miscommunication with Trent Sainsbury saw Australia score an own goal.
Mile Jedinak - 7
A marked improvement from the Socceroos when the skipper was introduced at half-time. His passing was confident and calmed down Australia.
Jackson Irvine - 7
Got half an hour of gametime, coming on for Tom Rogic. His movement and passing as Australia advanced in midfield was exceptional and could be a smoky to start against France.
Daniel Arzani - 7
The 19 year old replaced Robbie Kruse with 20 minutes to go. The hero for Australia as he cut inside with a dipping shot that was helped on from some shocking goalkeeping. A spectacular pass opened up Hungary as Irvine crossed for the winning own goal.
Tim Cahill - N/A
Replaced Tomi Juric with ten minutes to go for his 106th cap.
