AS FOOTBALL continues to grow across the country, its expansion is set to be fuelled by the bank balances of Australia’s richest people.
Charting the 50 wealthiest people in Aussie football, the first ever FourFourTwo Australian Football Rich List encompasses $11.5bn of wealth, includes 13 players and four billionaires.
Despite the presence of many high profile footballers, it's the titans of Australian business who dominate the top of the list.
The top 10 boasts over $10bn of wealth from the likes of Westfield and FFA chairman Frank Lowy, Gold Coast United's mining magnate Clive Palmer and property developers Con and Ross Makris from Adelaide Galaxy.
Socceroo hero Harry Kewell heads the group of current players to make the rich list, his estimated wealth of $54m putting him at No.18. In total 13 players make the top 50, including Newcastle United striker Mark Viduka (No.24), Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer (No.30) and Everton midfielder Tim Cahill (No.37).
"It's no shock to see many of the top Socceroos make the list but the amount of high powered businessmen at the top of our list is the real surprise," says Australian FourFourTwo editor Paul Hansford. "Football is now seen as the Australian sporting code to invest in, and when you look at the expansion of the game both domestically and into Asia, it's easy to see why the country's brightest businessmen want to get on board.
"While the total wealth of the football rich list is $11.5bn, only $153m of that is from current footballers. That means a phenomenal amount of money is being invested from outside the game and that can only mean good things for the future of football in this country."
The full list can be seen in the March edition of FourFourTwo magazine, on sale February 4.
