Barcelona face English champions Manchester United in the Champions League semi-final, while in the league they have a mountain to climb to make up a nine-point gap on leaders Real Madrid.

The Catalan club have been plagued by inconsistency of late, winning just once in their last seven games in the Primera Liga.

But Abidal says he has not given up the fight to claim a Champions League and La Liga double just yet.

"We're competitors and we all want to finish first," he told the club's official website, www.fcbarcelona.cat.

"There are fewer and fewer games and it is difficult because there is a difference of nine points, but we want to win and we hope that Real Madrid slip up.

"The aim is to win all the games. I have faith in the league."

Abidal insisted his comments were more than hot air, saying: "I'm not saying this to look good or to please people, but because that has been the team's objective since the start of the season and because we will fight to the end."

And the France international did not hide when it came to highlighting the reasons why Barca have fallen so short of expectations, saying he would rather not play than let the side down.

He said: "We let in too many goals, and it's demoralising to see that we go in front just to concede goals.

"I try to be at 100%, because I don't want to let the team down in such an important final stretch in the league.

"If I don't think I'm at my best, responsibility obliges me to tell the coach not to play me."

The former Lyon player, who signed for the Nou Camp outfit last summer, puts his bad form down to an inability to adapt to changes, such as playing matches at 10pm.

"The way we work here is different from in Lyon, and so are the times of the games, as we play very late," he said.

"At the start I didn't have any problems, but now I want to adapt as quickly as possible so that things no longer affect me."
