The Merseysiders rejected a bid from the Old Trafford outfit earlier in the week, but it is thought David Moyes has not been put off in his attempts to raid his former club.

However, Barkley, who has made 18 appearances for Everton thus far in his fledgling career, is hoping the England left-back will elect to stay put.

"I've been following what is happening at Everton and I desperately want Leighton to stay," he toldĀ Sky Sports News.

"He's someone I look up to, a role model in how he conducts himself and the strides he has made in his career."

Baines played in all 38 of Everton's Premier League fixtures last term, providing seven assists and five goals.

The 28-year-old moved to Goodison Park from Wigan in 2007, having come through the club's youth academy.
