EXCLUSIVE: Heart defender Michael Beauchamp has begun running on his injured ankle and says it’s touch and go if he plays this Saturday against Franz Straka’s Fury.
Beauchamp, 29, injured his ankle against Adelaide United in round three and subsequently missed last weekend’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Perth Glory at AAMI Park.
It was bad timing as it also forced him out of new coach Holger Osieck's first Socceroos squad for two friendlies away to Switzerland and Poland on September 3 and 7.
The Socceroo defender, who caught the eye during the World Cup in South Africa, was taking a wait and see approach ahead of the Fury clash as the newest A-League franchise search for their first ever win.
“I’m not 100% sure,” he told au.fourfourtwo.com. "I went for a jog today and it wasn’t feeling too bad. Obviously this is a bit of a short week, so maybe I’m pushing it a little bit.
“But definitely the following week if not this one."
Last week’s Heart clash, their second home game, drew just under 6000 fans. While disappointing, Beauchamp argues two other AFL games were on at the same time. And he’s confident the hard yards done by the club in the off-season to promote the club will eventually pay off.
As an added incentive, Heart has announced that fans attending the AFL blockbuster between Collingwood and Western Bulldogs at the MCG will gain free entry into AAMI Park for the A-League clash by showing their membership cards at the gates.
With bounce-down just 20 minutes after the scheduled end of Heart’s game, it may be a little tight. But with close to a full house expected, and the area overflowing with fans travelling to the nearby stadim, Heart might just pick up a few new fans.
“If we can get a few of their fans coming out to our games it’d be great – especially as it’s a really good football stadium [AAMI Park]. It doesn’t matter where you sit, you get a great view. The more we get,the more the atmosphere the more who’ll want to come back the following week," said the former Nurnberg defender.
But there should be little problem pulling a crowd for the inaugural “Yarraside” derby when Victory and Heart clash on October 2 at AAMI. Specifically scheduled for after the conclusion to the AFL finals, a full house is tipped for the inaugural intra-city A-League derby.
However, Beauchamp, on a two year deal with the A-League’s newest franchise, said this was not on the Heart players’ radar just yet.
“Not at all, we’re just concentrating on the Fury. We’re definitely not looking too far ahead but, when it does come around, everyone’s going to get fired up for that game.”
He added: “When you’re playing in trial matches it’s different to playing in the A-League. But each week we are getting better and that’s a positive thing.”
