The 66-year-old, who will combine the two roles, will mainly focus on next season, when Mario Been will take over as manager.

The Eredivisie giants have struggled this season and look set to miss out on European football next term.

Gertjan Verbeek was sacked as manager last month with coach Leon Vlemmings taking the role until the end of the season.

Beenhakker, who has managed Feyenoord on two occasions, met a delegation from the Rotterdam club last month and revealed he jumped at the chance to get involved - but only in an advisory capacity.

He said: "Even before the coffee was on the table, I already said yes. Feyenoord is in my blood. I never made a secret of that.

"Regarding a role as interim coach, we were done in 20 seconds. That was not needed I found, and the directors of Feyenoord agreed.

"The choice to let Leon Vlemmings end the season is fine in my opinion.

"I will not interfere in the work of Leon, only when he asks me to, I will. I will look at the new season mostly.

"I want to set up an environment in which Mario can work at the optimal level. There must come more balance into Feyenoord, both in the selection and in the technical staff.

"Then you talk about quality, mentality and about personality. I will focus my attention on that specifically in the coming months.

"I think that I can do nice things, with my experience, knowledge and contacts."

Beenhakker, who has coached Holland, Ajax, Real Madrid, Saudi Arabia and Trinidad & Tobago among others in an illustrious career, revealed the Polish Football Association were not keen on him taking a dual role.

"In Poland they absolutely were against a double function," he continued. "I respect that and accept it. But FA chairman (Grzegorz) Lato told me: 'What you do in your free time is your thing.'

"In the past I went golfing, I did macrame and I did underwater chess, what do I know? Now I will help Feyenoord.

"With Poland we have two World Cup qualifiers at the end of March and after that only a friendly game in June. So I can have a perfect combination."

Beenhakker insisted he does not know what will happen next season in terms of any continued association with Feyenoord.

"I can't tell anything about next season," he added. "In June we must have a structure in which Mario can work. That is step one. I didn't think yet about the next steps.

"Gertjan Verbeek signed a contract for three years here, and now he sits at home. What today is the truth in football, is a lie tomorrow.

"I hope to soon have a talk with a group of possible investors. I am not high in a tower to point everyone the way. We must do this all together."
