EXPERIENCED Adelaide United FC goalkeeper Daniel Beltrame has re-signed with the club for the 2008/09 season.
Beltrame’s re-signing is added good news for The Reds, who currently sit top of Group E in the AFC Champions League 2008 and face Chinese champions Changchun Yatai on Wednesday night at Hindmarsh Stadium.
Acquiring Beltrame’s services for another year gives extra strength and depth to United’s stocks between the posts, with the 32 year old joining Eugene Galekovic as The Reds’ confirmed keepers for next season.
Adelaide United Coach Aurelio Vidmar says having secured keepers of the calibre of both Beltrame and Galekovic for next season is extremely positive for the club going forward.
“It is great that Daniel has signed. We believe that with his signing we have got two very good quality, competent goalkeepers in our squad,” Vidmar said.
“He’s definitely got much fitter and lost a lot of weight since he came to Adelaide United so he’s looking in really good condition.”
The former Newcastle, Wollongong and Parramatta keeper has had an injury interrupted 2007/08 having only made five appearances in the Hyundai A-League 2007/08 Season.
Despite missing time on the field, Beltrame has used the recovery time to get himself in peak physical condition and he is excited about continuing his career with Adelaide United.
“It’s great. I’m looking forward to having another season here and all I want to do is play so hopefully it will be an injury free year,” Beltrame said.
Beltrame, who has been United’s number one since the Hyundai A-League began, and Galekovic who has impressed since crossing the border from Melbourne Victory mid way through last season, will compete for the number one spot, which is something Vidmar is trying to establish in every position.
“That’s what we’re trying to have right across the squad, that there is competition in every position and that you can’t get comfortable and always need to be on your game,” Vidmar said.
Beltrame believes this competition for places is healthy and that it can only have a positive impact in the club’s success.
“Eugene is a great goalkeeper and he’s proved it since he’s been here. I’d like to be number one and seeing Eugene do well makes me work harder so I think it is beneficial for the players and the club that we can push each other,” Beltrame said.
With Galekovic putting in consistently fine performances, Beltrame may have to wait for his chance to start but after a lengthy lay off, he is eager to be back in the action.
“It has been awhile since I’ve played so to have a run would be good,” Beltrame said.
Beltrame has made a total of 40 appearances for The Reds (30 in the Hyundai A-League), his highlight for the club to date arguably when he was the hero in Adelaide United’s Preliminary Final penalty shootout win over the Newcastle Jets in 2006/07.
