The 16-year-wait is over as the American girls claim revenge.
The 2015 Women's World Cup ended with USA defeating defending champions Japan 5-2 at the BC Palace Stadium in Vancouver, Canada.
In a rematch of the 2011 final, it was the USA who raced out of the blocks, jumping to a 4-0 lead inside 20 minutes when captain Carli Lloyd scored the fastest hat-trick in World Cup history. Her third goal was nothing less than spectacular. After noticing Japanese goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori was off her line, Lloyd went for the audacious shot from half-way. The ball sailed over the top of the Japanese keeper, slamming off the post and into the net. Japan then tried to work its way into the match and managed to pull a goal back before half-time.
However, the American girls were not going to let the World Cup trophy slip out of their hands, dominating the entire game to eventually run out 5-2 winners. It was their third World Cup crown, coming 16 years after their first.
Adding to her first World Cup winners' medal, Lloyd also won the Golden Ball for best player at the tournament. She also tied with Germany's Celia Sasic for the Golden Shoe award after scoring six goals throughout the tournament. USA goalkeeper Hope Solo won back-to-back Golden Glove awards.
