Blues see Calderwood as a candidate to become number two to new boss Chris Hughton.

Current assistant manager Peter Grant is expected to eventually join former City boss Alex McLeish at Aston Villa.

Hughton and Calderwood previously worked together at Newcastle as manager and first team coach respectively.

Before that, Calderwood had been a player and Hughton on the coaching staff at the same time at Tottenham.

Calderwood left St. James' Park last October - shortly before Hughton was sacked - to take charge of Hibs, who finished 10th in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League last season.

The former Scottish international previously had managerial experience at Northampton and Nottingham Forest.

Meanwhile, Birmingham remain determined central defender Scott Dann and striker Cameron Jerome will not be allowed to leave on the cheap.

City are already resigned to losing midfielder Craig Gardner today in a £5million plus switch to Sunderland.

Stoke are believed to be offering £16m for Dann and Jerome.

Hibs last week issued a statement after Calderwood was linked with a switch to former club Nottingham Forest as assistant to Steve McClaren, saying no approach had been received and one would not be welcome.

Speaking last Friday, Calderwood said Hughton had not been in touch with an offer and would not be drawn on hypothetical questions.

And today the Clydesdale Bank Premier League club refused to comment on the latest reports linking the former Scotland defender with St Andrew's.
