EXCLUSIVE: Kiwis sources confirm Wellington Phoenix are close to signing former Liverpool keeper Dean Bouzanis – who was recently linked with a move to Melbourne Victory.
Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert has publicly stated his wish to find a quality back-up to All-White World Cup star Mark Paston and Bouzanis, 20, would appear to be an ideal choice.
"We want somebody who's got some good experience and can challenge for that numbe one spot, if not be the number one keeper,” Herbert reportedly said.
Earlier this month, it appeared the club-less Olyroo shotstopper would be joining Tando Velaphi as a Melbourne Victory keeper after the former Anfield man tweeted: "I can now confirm that I have agreed terms with Melbourne Victory FC. Looking forward to the new season with my new club.”
He added the move was the “most important decision” of his life.
However the deal to Melbourne was mysteriously scuppered amid rumours the former Sydney FC stopper had left Australia bound for the UK.
After playing for the Sky Blues as a 16-year-old and earning the praise of keeper coach Jimmy Fraser, Bouzanis was signed by Liverpool in 2007 as one of the back-up keepers to Pepe Reina.
The talented Australian, who has also played for the Greek national youth team, went on loan to Accrington Stanley during his period with the English giant. He parted ways with the former European champions earlier this year.
In his time at Anfield, then Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez publicly sung his praises as one of the best young goalkeepers in the world.
