Mexico came out the blocks thick and fast with Brazil back pedalling for the first twenty minutes of the match. Mexico were putting on stunning pressure but had nothing to show for it.

That would be the story of the match as they threatened on the counter-attack but Neymar broke the deadlock with some crafty interplay with Willian as he opened the scoring inside the first ten minutes of the second half.

Roberto Firmino finished the match off as Neymar drilled the ball in low for the Liverpool forward to tap home for yet another 2-0 victory.

Brazil now face the winner between Belgium and Japan in the quarter-finals.

BRAZIL

Alisson Becker - 6

Got a vital fist to a Guardado cross that was hanging up for Javier Hernandez at the back post. Forced to tip Carlos Vela's effort from outside the box over the bar but apart from that he wasn't tested.

Fagner - 6

Numerous attacks for Mexico came down his right flank with cross after cross going into dangerous areas in the box. Forced back and unable to attack because of the constant threat of Carlos Vela. A big improvement in the second half, getting forward much more.

Thiago Silva - 7.5

Showed some strong character to ride out the immense early pressure put on by Mexico in the first twenty minutes. Brilliant defending to keep the match scoreless.

Miranda - 7

Got an important block in from Hirving Lozano's half-volley as the ball fell to him from Alisson's punch. He was in the wars as he blocked more than two shots inside Brazil's penalty area.

Felipe Luis - 6.5

Got boxed in by Mexico's remarkable high pressure, turning over the ball in Brazil's defensive or middle third. Had some trouble with his passing in the first half and was pinned back by Lozano.

Paulinho - 6.5

Mexico's positioning meant Paulinho had to choose his runs forward carefully unless they were caught out. His passing was mediocre but he still defended well, pickpocketing the ball from the Mexican players when the defensive situation was under control. Should have made it 2-0 on 58 minutes with plenty of space and time to finish inside the box.

Casemiro - 6

Hustled inside the box to block Hector Herrera's shot in the 21st minute after the Mexican midfielder skipped past Miranda to open up the space. Once Brazil got onto the front foot in the second half Casemiro kept tabs on Mexico's midfield.

Phillipe Coutinho - 5

Rushed his opportunities to have a crack at goal, blazing two chances over the cross bar while many others were saved by Ochoa.

Willian - 7

Tracked back to win the ball when Brazil were under threat and was vital in maintaining their confidence going forward. Got into dangerous positions with Gabriel Jesus hitting the by-line and drilling crosses in. A great turn of pace and cross for Neymar who opened the scoring.

Neymar Jr. - 7.5

Produced Brazil's first shot of the match which stung the palms of Ochoa in the fifth minute. Danced past Ayala and Alvarez to open up the space for the shot but it was smothered by Ochoa. Extraordinary dribbling and backheel to Willian before he opened the scoring.

Gabriel Jesus - 5.5

Fought hard to hold the ball up and win it back to stop Brazil from getting sprung on the counter-attack. Had a half chance halfway through the first half that was saved by Ochoa.

Subs

Fernandinho - 6

Brought on for Paulinho with ten minutes to go. Released Neymar who crossed for Firmino for the second goal.

Roberto Firmino - 6

Finished off the match with Brazil's second, a tap-in from Neymar's cross.

Marquinhos - N/A

Brought on in added time.

MEXICO

Guillermo Ochoa - 7

Kept Mexico in the match with more than five saves stopping certain goals. Another good stop inside the box, saving Neymar's acute, angled effort on 25 minutes. Three minutes into the second half he was called upon again to deny Coutinho's shot in the box and Paulinho followed up unsuccessfully.

Edson Alvarez - 5

Struggled to keep up with the dancing feet of Neymar once the superstar got going in the match. Some excellent recoveries and tackles inside the box to redeem himself moments later. Pulled out of position by Neymar's run in the lead up to the goal.

Hugo Ayala - 5

Shepherded the ball in the early stages of the match as Brazil looked to build up their attacks and play balls in behind. Backed off too easily and allowed too much pressure from Brazil as they were peppered with chances.

Carlos Salcedo - 4.5

Some crunching tackles and good blocks from crosses in the opening fifteen minutes. Got caught up in the circus of Neymar and Willian when he couldn't turn to block the cross quick enough.

Jesus Gallardo - 5.5

Showed an extraordinary range of passing to open up the pitch, especially with some cross-field balls to Hirving Lozano on the right wing. Controlled the ball beautifully in midfield as he raced away and took a dangerous shot.

Hector Herrera - 6.5

A chance inside the box saw him shimmy past Miranda but the Brazilian players got back to block his shot. Exquisite range of passing opened up space for Lozano and Vela but the chances to shoot never came.

Andreas Guardado - 6.5

Got forward and made incisions into the box early causing problems for Brazil, infiltrating the penalty area twice in five minutes.

Rafael Marquez - 6

Great passing as usual, playing the ball forward only when the opportunity arose. He controlled the tempo of the game also playing possession with his defenders. It is surely the 39-year-old's final game for Mexico.

Carlos Vela - 6.5

Strided forward well and shrugged off the challenges of Fagner who couldn't cope with his strength. A great run opened up the space for Herrera to shoot just inside the box but it was blocked.

Hirving Lozano - 6.5

Brilliant control of the ball throughout the match and was always in a position to attack, whether it be a cross or a shot.

Javier Hernandez - 5

Not near his best as he seemed slow to make his runs, although he moved the ball quickly and held it up. His decision making seemed sluggish.

Subs

Miguel Layun - 5.5

Brought on at half-time for Marquez. Helped Alvarez on the right deal with Neymar's dazzling feet. Poor communication with Alvarez while they jockeyed Neymar in the lead up to the opening goal.

Jonothan Dos Santos - 4

Brought on for Alvarez ten minutes into the second half.

Raul Jiminez - N/A

Brought on for Hernandez in the second half to look for an equaliser.
