Brazil have booked their place in the quarter-finals after a tense 2-0 victory over Mexico courtesy of second-half strikes from Neymar and Roberto Firmino. Mexico have been knocked out at the round of 16 stage for the seventh consecutive tournament.
Mexico came out the blocks thick and fast with Brazil back pedalling for the first twenty minutes of the match. Mexico were putting on stunning pressure but had nothing to show for it.
That would be the story of the match as they threatened on the counter-attack but Neymar broke the deadlock with some crafty interplay with Willian as he opened the scoring inside the first ten minutes of the second half.
Roberto Firmino finished the match off as Neymar drilled the ball in low for the Liverpool forward to tap home for yet another 2-0 victory.
Brazil now face the winner between Belgium and Japan in the quarter-finals.
BRAZIL
Alisson Becker - 6
Got a vital fist to a Guardado cross that was hanging up for Javier Hernandez at the back post. Forced to tip Carlos Vela's effort from outside the box over the bar but apart from that he wasn't tested.
Fagner - 6
Numerous attacks for Mexico came down his right flank with cross after cross going into dangerous areas in the box. Forced back and unable to attack because of the constant threat of Carlos Vela. A big improvement in the second half, getting forward much more.
Thiago Silva - 7.5
Showed some strong character to ride out the immense early pressure put on by Mexico in the first twenty minutes. Brilliant defending to keep the match scoreless.
Miranda - 7
Got an important block in from Hirving Lozano's half-volley as the ball fell to him from Alisson's punch. He was in the wars as he blocked more than two shots inside Brazil's penalty area.
Felipe Luis - 6.5
Got boxed in by Mexico's remarkable high pressure, turning over the ball in Brazil's defensive or middle third. Had some trouble with his passing in the first half and was pinned back by Lozano.
Paulinho - 6.5
Mexico's positioning meant Paulinho had to choose his runs forward carefully unless they were caught out. His passing was mediocre but he still defended well, pickpocketing the ball from the Mexican players when the defensive situation was under control. Should have made it 2-0 on 58 minutes with plenty of space and time to finish inside the box.
