NEW Adelaide United defender Alemao touched down in Adelaide today after arriving from Brazil to begin his Australian football career with the Reds.
The 26 year old Brazilian comes to Adelaide after recently finishing a Brazilian season with CA Juventus, and he is looking forward to bringing his game to the Hyundai A-League.
“It is good to be here in Adelaide. In my first impression of Adelaide I spoke with Cassio and he told me it was a good country to play in, so I can’t wait to play here and show my skills,” Alemao said through an interpreter after arriving.
Adelaide United coach Aurelio Vidmar signed the right sided defender to fill the spot vacated by retired veteran Richie Alagich and Vidmar is confident Alemao can provide the Reds with a strong presence in the position.
“He is definitely a solid player. He is someone who can defend and obviously get forward. I think today you need full backs who can do that, and he certainly has that in his game,” Vidmar said.
“In the clubs that he has played for in the past couple of years he has scored goals from that position so if you’ve got a full back who can get you one or two goals a year that’s an added bonus.”
Alemao has played against fellow United defender Cassio previously back in Brazil, and he says United having a number of other Brazilians in the squad will help him settle into his new club.
“It is important to play with other Brazilians because I don’t speak very good English right now but hopefully I will be able to pick it up slowly in a few months,” Alemao said.
Alemao will begin training with the squad when pre-season training commences on June 23. Alemao joins Adelaide United’s other Brazilian contingent Cassio, Diego and new striker Cristiano, who is expected to arrive in Adelaide on Monday, as The Reds’ foreigners for the Hyundai A-League 2008/09 Season.
