Werder Bremen will not allow influential playmaker Diego to compete in the Olympic Games this summer.
With the Games clashing with the start of the Bundesliga season, Bayern Munich have already told Mark van Bommel, Martin Demichelis and Lucio that they will not be released to represent their countries in Beijing and Bremen are following suit.
"With due respect, this is the Olympic Games and for a footballer, the World Cup is the largest competition where they can measure themselves with the best," said Bremen director of sport Klaus Allofs in the Weser Kurier newspaper.
"He belongs to the 'A' team and, in my eyes, that is not a team for the Olympics."
Should Diego still find a way to represent Brazil this summer, he would be absent for the first two games of the 2008/09 Bundesliga season
Apart from upsetting the 23-year-old, Bremen know that blocking him from playing at the Games cannot get them into any trouble.
"We will work on having him available to us," added Allofs.
"We know that by not releasing him, we are not at risk of any sanctions."
