AUSTRALIAN Mark Bresciano believes this weekend will be crucial for his club Lazio's hopes of claiming a UEFA Champions League place as he prepares to face former club Parma.
Lazio are currently fifth in Italy's Serie A, with the top four qualifying for next season's UEFA Champions League.
Bresciano, who has never played Champions League football, started and played 83 minutes last Sunday as Lazio blew a two-goal lead to lose 4-3 to title-chasing Napoli.
But the result wasn't disastrous for the Rome club's Champions League hopes, after fourth-placed Udinese lost 2-0 at Lecce, meaning Lazio remain only two points adrift of the top four.
This weekend Udinese host sixth-placed AS Roma on Saturday, while on Sunday Lazio host Bresciano's struggling ex-club Parma, who sacked boss Pasquale Marino earlier in the week.
"They are in crisis, but the new coach may give them the desire to win,” Bresciano, 31, told La Lazio Siamo Noi.
“A victory will be important, this could be the last chance for the Champions League. If we don't win it will be very hard to achieve.”
Lazio haven't competed in Europe's top club competition since 2007-2008.
Udinese's clash with Roma may open the door for Lazio to move back into the top four, but Bresciano said he wasn't hoping for a particular result from Saturday's game.
“We are not afraid if Roma are behind us. We are looking forward,” Bresciano said.
“We must not waste energy thinking about others, because we think we have a chance to finish this season well.”
And Bresciano was confident Lazio could respond after last weekend's stunning loss to Napoli, where he acquitted himself well in midfield.
"Napoli was a strange game. We were ahead 2-0 but then we lost it mentally, we lost concentration and after two goals out of the blue the game changed,” he said.
Bresciano, who spent four years at Parma from 2002 to 2006, added he would be happy to score against his former club.
"They were important years of my career at Parma where I made strides. But there are none of my former teammates still there so I wouldn't mind him scoring, in fact I would only be too happy,” he said.
