THOMAS Broich and Marcos Flores are in the running to become the first non-Australian players to win the Professional Footballers Association's Footballer of the Year, while Mark Schwarzer and Tim Cahill are a chance of winning the award for a second time.
Broich, who starred for Brisbane Roar in their Hyundai A-League championship triumph and Flores, who won the Johnny Warren Medal as the best player in the league while playing for Adelaide United, are the only two players who plied their trade in Australia who have been nominated,.
The other ten nominees are all Socceroos overseas, although Matt McKay's nomination is built both on his performances for Brisbane before his transfer to Scotland, and his efforts for the national team.
As well as McKay, Cahill and Schwarzer, Harry Kewell, Lucas Neill, Brett Emerton, Brett Holman, Josh Kennedy, Sasa Ognenovski and Luke Wilkshere are also nominated.
The peer-voted PFA Footballer of the Year has only been awarded for the past two years with Cahill winning the inaugural award in 2009 and Schwarzer in 2010.
Nominees are chosen by the PFA Awards Committee which comprises Paul Okon, Tony Vidmar, Mark Bosnich, Stan Lazaridis, Zeljko Kalac and Craig Moore.
The winner will be announced at the Australian Football Awards on October 4.
There are ten nominees for the PFA Harry Kewell Medal for the Under 23 category, including Mustafa Amini and Matt Ryan, who both played in this year's Hyundai A-League Grand Final, as well as Robbie Kruse, Matthew Leckie and Nikita Rukavytsya, who are all playing in Germany.
