No Byung-jun had put the visitors in front after seven minutes of the first-leg encounter with a smart finish but Victor Karpenko's stunning volley drew Bunyodkor level on the half-hour mark.

Kim Hyung-il saw red for Pohang in the second half and reigning AFC Player of the Year Djeparov then struck twice inside the final 11 minutes to seal victory for Luiz Felipe Scolari's side.

Pohang, who demolished Newcastle Jets 6-0 in the last 16, got off to a great start when Kim Jung-kyum's cross from the left fell perfectly to the feet off No and the striker calmly controlled the ball on the edge of the six-yard box before firing past keeper Ignatiy Nesterov.

Bunyodkor equalised in spectacular fashion 15 minutes before the break when Shin Hwa-yong's punch from a Rivaldo corner fell to Karpenko and he unleashed a 30-yard volley that found the back of the net with the help of a slight deflection.

Pohang were dealt a further setback after 66 minutes when Kim collected his second yellow card in the space of 11 minutes for an unnecessary shirt pull and the defender's dismissal proved crucial as the hosts scored twice more.

Jasur Hasanov broke free down the left before picking out the onrushing Djeparov and he swept home in the 79th minute.

The duo combined again with four minutes to go as Hasanov picked out Djeparov at the far post and the midfielder made no mistake.

Pohang thought they had grabbed a late lifeline in stoppage time when they had the ball in the back of the net but it was disallowed seemingly for offside.
