ADELAIDE star Nathan Burns pushed himself too far this season and caused the hamstring rip that's knocked him out for up to five weeks, he has admitted.
United’s horror injury run has continued with the striker ruled out with a grade two hamstring tear.
Burns pulled up and hit the ground grasping his right hamstring after making a run with approximately 10 minutes to go in The Reds’ 2-2 draw with Melbourne Victory.
“The doctor said I have a grade two tear so that could be anywhere between 3-5 weeks depending on how my rehabilitation goes. He said to take it a week at a time and we will just play it by ear,” Burns said.
At the time, Burns was hoping it was just cramp as Coach Aurelio Vidmar had made his full quota of substitutions, but the Qantas Under 23’s squad member was unable to continue as he limped off the Telstra Dome.
“It’s my first muscle tissue injury so when I did it, I wasn’t quite sure what I’d done because I had never had a soft tissue injury,” Burns said.
“I really wanted to get back on, I was hoping it was just cramp because I realised we had made our three subs and we would be down to ten men and it was really disappointing but at the end of the day, if I could have been out there I would have been.”
Juggling Adelaide United and Australian representative commitments, Burns has had a hectic past 12 months and the heavy workload, among other factors, may have contributed to the injury occurring.
“We’ve had some hard training sessions and you’ve got to consider the last 12 months has been tough for me and I think it just came down to pushing my body to the limit but these things happen,” he said.
However Burns, who has scored three goals from 12 appearances this season, is focusing on the positives and with the Christmas break coming up, believes he should be ready to go before the finals.
“I don’t think it’s that bad considering I get a break now so I will be fresh for the finals and we get a two week break where there are no games so therefore I will probably only miss three games which is better for me,” Burns said.
The grade two tear means Burns will miss United’s big match against the league leading Central Coast Mariners at Hindmarsh Stadium on Friday night and the clash at the Adelaide Oval on December 28 against Sydney FC.
On the up side for The Reds, midfielders Jason Spagnuolo and Bobby Petta plus experienced defender Angelo Costanzo should be available for selection to face the Mariners.
