John Robertson was sacked on Sunday by Livi owner Pearse Flynn and the Irishman claimed he had received around a dozen applications for the vacancy by lunchtime on Monday.

Clyde boss Joe Miller is understood to be Flynn's preferred choice.

However, former Motherwell boss Butcher, who recently joined Partick Thistle as assistant to Jimmy Bone after returning from an eight-month spell as boss of Sydney FC, has also been linked with the post, as has Bobby Williamson and Craig Brewster.

The former England skipper, speaking at the launch of an £8million public appeal to build a state-of-the-art Marie Curie Hospice in Glasgow for cancer patients, said: "I haven't (applied) and I've not been contacted by them.

"I'd like to get back in as a number one but I'm a number two at Thistle and I enjoy just being at a football club.

"If I'm at a football club in some capacity then I'm happy.

"There will be more jobs available which is unfortunate for the people that are in those jobs at the moment.

"I do feel for the managers in this situation because it's sometimes at the whim of the chairman and the board when managers lose their jobs.

"The Livingston job is a good job, it's a lovely club.

"When I was at Motherwell we had some battles in the past and I thoroughly enjoyed them.

"So we will see. But as I say, I've not been approached by them."

Butcher admits that despite the turnover of managers increasing by the season, his hunger has not been diminished.

He said: "Now that I'm one of those trying to get back in as a manager, I realise that there is a lot of competition.

"Poor Bobby Williamson hasn't had a job since 2005 so he deserves to get back in somewhere.

"With football managers, it's sometimes about being in the right place at the right time.

"Sometimes when you are in a job, another job will come your way.

"Then, sometimes when you are out of a job, nothing happens. You've got to be patient and optimistic.

"It's fantastic to be at Partick Thistle, there are some great characters there.

"It's nice to be back working with a group of players that are terrific to be with, who listen to what you say and get on with their job.

"Thistle have consolidated their position in the First Division now and we have a good platform to work from for next season."
