The result was the perfect start to the season for the Jets who had seen owner Nathan Tinkler dismiss coach Branko Culina earlier this week with caretaker Craig Deans taking the reins for Round One.

Earlier it didn't look like it'd be a happy day for Deans as Mate Dugandzic had put Heart ahead with a close-range finish on his club debut on 24 minutes.

However, Newcastle levelled seven minutes later thanks to Ryan Griffiths' fine free-kick, before he fired the Jets ahead on the stroke of half-time.

Young Heart defender Curtis Good turned the ball over in defence, allowing Ali Abbas to set up Griffiths who shot home on his left foot despite Aziz Behich's best efforts to clear on the goal-line.

Heart, who looked good going forward, equalised in the second half on 50 minutes through Dugandzic again after Fred's well-weighted cross.

Substitute Nick Kalmar almost inventively scored a winner for Heart on 77 minutes, before Byun's late cross-shot deflected past Heart keeper Nikola Roganovic.

The Korean full-back charged into the penalty area and tried an ambitious shot which came off defender Michael Marrone's back.

Marrone watched forlornly as the ball lobed into the corner of the net as the home side erupted in celebration after one of the most dramatic weeks in their history.
