The national team and skipper Lucas Neill has come under heavy fire, especially from ex-Socceroos, following the back-to-back 6-0 losses to Brazil and France, and the axing of Holger Osieck.

Speaking after Australia’s 6-0 win over Canada, Cahill said that kind of criticism came the job.

“That’s the nature of the beast, I’ve had it my whole career,” he said.
“Football’s about reality and the reality is our performances have been poor.

"So when people talk about the way you play, that’s just the way it goes. For me, I’m always answered the call by playing football, doing well domestically, and answering the call when called upon to play internationally.

"It’s part and parcel of football.”

Cahill admitted the past week has been arguably the toughest in his 10-year Socceroo career.

“I suppose it’s the toughest but the best thing about it is, we’ve qualified for a World Cup,” he said.

“We’ve trying things, it’s backfired, we’ve had two 6-0 losses but it’s about putting it right on the football pitch. I really feel some of these youngsters are going to be ready and their pushing.

"Tonight was the positive of them seeing doing so well. I’m buzzing for the way it went and we just need to kick on.”

The New York Red Bulls forward complimented the performances of Jason Davidson and goalkeepers Mat Ryan and Mitchell Langerak, among others, in the win over Canada as well as the impact of interim coach Aurelio Vidmar.

“Jason Davidson, he played exceptionally well,” Cahill said. “It’s fantastic for him. [Matthew] Leckie came on and scored, I’m running out of names.

"I’m happy because it’s a nice lift for our fans and for the country, and that’s what its all about, standing up and being counted.

"Canada were different opposition, not the same as Brazil or France, but the positives were that with Viddie [caretaker coach Aurelio Vidmar] taking the reins the last two days in training have been really positive, playing on the front foot.

"He needs to take credit for it because it was a whole change of formation, whole change of personnel. And overall it’s such a great feeling to get a win after such a low week last week.”
