For more on the reaction in France to the Socceroos, FourFourTwo spoke to Corentin Dtrp from France press news agency (AFP) who ran the rule over Didier’s Deschamps men.

Fears of another group of death were pushed aside after the Socceroos avoided the likes of Germany, Spain and Argentina by drawing France, Denmark and Peru in Group C.

As a result, Socceroos fans are now hopeful that Australia can make it past the group stages for the first time since Germany 2006.

However French journalist Dtrp revealed that French media view the coach-less Socceroos as the weakest link in Group C.

“L’Équipe’s headline was “Aussies with no head,” he said.

“In terms of the greatest threat to France, L'Équipe also put Denmark first, then Peru, followed by Australia because we don’t know much about the Australia team to be really honest.

"We only know mainly Tim Cahill’s aptitude for awesome goals in World Cups.”

While France will certainly be a formidable adversary, in the past they have shown an ability to self-destruct and Dtrp highlighted this tendency.

“France has a long history of underestimating its opponent,” he said.

“The 2002 and 2010 World Cups brought a bit of humility to French football.

“In qualifying for Russia 2018 France drew 0-0 against Luxembourg where they got tons of criticism because we never drew against Luxembourg for something like 100 years.

“But Deschamps is not the kind of guy to be underestimating or overconfident about international games.

“After the draw he said, “We played Australia in 2013 but it’s a team from a confederation we’re not used to playing". It’s a way of playing that looks like Britannic football, we will study with all our seriousness those three opponents.”
