For more on the reaction in France to the Socceroos, FourFourTwo spoke to Corentin Dtrp from France press news agency (AFP) who ran the rule over Didier’s Deschamps men.

Fears of another group of death were pushed aside after the Socceroos avoided the likes of Germany, Spain and Argentina by drawing France, Denmark and Peru in Group C.

As a result, Socceroos fans are now hopeful that Australia can make it past the group stages for the first time since Germany 2006.

However French journalist Dtrp revealed that French media view the coach-less Socceroos as the weakest link in Group C.

L’Équipe’s headline was “Aussies with no head,” he said.

“In terms of the greatest threat to France, L'Équipe also put Denmark first, then Peru, followed by Australia because we don’t know much about the Australia team to be really honest.

"We only know mainly Tim Cahill’s aptitude for awesome goals in World Cups.”

While France will certainly be a formidable adversary, in the past they have shown an ability to self-destruct and Dtrp highlighted this tendency.

“France has a long history of underestimating its opponent,” he said.

“The 2002 and 2010 World Cups brought a bit of humility to French football.

“In qualifying for Russia 2018 France drew 0-0 against Luxembourg where they got tons of criticism because we never drew against Luxembourg for something like 100 years.

“But Deschamps is not the kind of guy to be underestimating or overconfident about international games.

“After the draw he said, “We played Australia in 2013 but it’s a team from a confederation we’re not used to playing". It’s a way of playing that looks like Britannic football, we will study with all our seriousness those three opponents.”

No doubt that when the Socceroos take on France at the Kazan Arena on Saturday June 16 they will be huge underdogs. Especially when Dtrp points out the pedigree and the quality of their key personnel.

“Our strength is that we have great individual players such as Paul Pogba (Manchester United), Raphaël Varane (Real Madrid), Samuel Umtiti (Barcelona), Hugo lloris (Tottenham Hotspur) and Ngolo Kante (Chelsea),” he said.

“We have a great attack led by youngsters such as Kylian Mbappe (PSG) and Ousmane Dembele (Barcelona) if he comes back soon from injury.

"The formation France plays is usually 4-2-3-1 with Pogba-Kante in the midfield, with Antoine Griezmann (Atlético Madrid) behind Olivier Giroud (Arsenal) in attack and Mbappe and Kingsley Coman (Bayern Munich) or Thomas Lemar (AS Monaco) as wingers.

“Don’t forget we also have Anthony Martial (Manchester United) and Nabil Fekir (Lyon).”

But while France has strength going forward it’s at the back that an aggressive Socceroos might find some joy.

“France has been world champion with an ultra-defensive team, but this generation lacks great defenders,” Dtrp said.

“Before and during Euro 2016 we conceded tons of goals. Even though we scored more goals the fact is we took a lot. So, we are much more of an attacking team

“Another main weakness is there is a lack of international experience and France struggle to play as a team when Pogba or Kante is missing.

“When Kante is missing, the attack is quite stereotypical, and we struggle to attack and defend altogether. There have been critics over Deschamps on that topic lately.

“Finally, we lack players such as Sergio Ramos, Diego Godin and Pepe - footballers who are charismatic and devilish.

“Our ambassador Antoine Griezmann says it all. “Our team looks nice and talented and we are committed to succeed but maybe we’re not « bad » enough to win".”
