Canberra Stadium general manager Neale Guthrie and Canberra A-League bid leader Ivan Slavich today signed an in-principle agreement regarding the use of the stadium for a future Canberra A-League team.

Slavich said: "This is fantastic news for the Canberra A-League bid. Football players across Australia love playing at the Canberra stadium, on this surface. Players will be excited to play for Canberra when they know they can show their skills in a wonderful arena.

"We recently had a pre-season game between the Newcastle Jets and Central Coast Mariners at the stadium and both sets of players were thrilled to be playing on such a quality field. In football, the quality of the surface is vital to the quality of the game. With this surface our players can achieve their highest goals."

Stadium General Manager Neale Guthrie said, "It's a World Class facility. We've already hosted the Sydney Olympic football competition in 2000. The Rugby World Cup in 2003, and more recently the Rugby League World Cup played here. And of course we're home to National teams, the Canberra Raiders and the Brumbies. It's a marvellous venue and we're looking forward to seeing a Canberra A-League side walk out in front of a packed stadium in 2010.

"The Canberra Stadium has a special association for Canberrans and people from the region. In League and Union other teams find it hard to come here and win. With the special atmosphere the local people create we'd hope to see the Canberra A-League team getting the same benefit from this special place."

Canberra's A-League team will meet Football Federation Australia on Tuesday.
