The world champions meet the Scots on Saturday in a crucial qualifier, with each side knowing victory would secure them a place at next summer's finals in Austria and Switzerland.

France stand top of Group B, one point ahead of Scotland who also have a one-point advantage over Italy.

France and Scotland each have one game remaining, and Italy have two fixtures, against Scotland and group whipping boys Faroe Islands.

"I am surprised that Scotland have shown a lot of strength in this group," said Cannavaro.

"But I am even more surprised that they beat France, one of the strongest sides in the world."

Alex McLeish's side have beaten Les Bleus twice in Group B, winning 1-0 in Glasgow and Paris.

"Prior to qualifying, everyone thought that France and Italy would secure the top spots in the group," said the Real Madrid defender.

"But Scotland are still in there with a chance."

A draw on Saturday would only suit Scotland if France were to lose in Ukraine next Wednesday, while a defeat would see them eliminated.

Italy would be relying on a big favour from Ukraine if Scotland were to win in Mount Florida.

"Saturday's game is going to be a very hard game for us," admitted Cannavaro.

"Scotland need a win and for us it's crucial to go to Scotland and play well and get a win. It's going to be difficult but we know we can do it."
