The 25-year-old midfielder hasn't played in Australia's top flight since Round Five last season and admits - having never suffered a long-term injury before - he's uncertain but optimistic about his return.

''It's been about 11 months for me and I'm looking forward to this first game against Sydney," Celeski told The Age. "It's going to be the real tester.

"I hadn't ever really had a big injury before. It's such a long time to be laid off.''

A fortnight ago, the recovering Celeski scored the winner for the Victory in a pre-season win over Dandenong Thunder and coach Ernie Merrick says the midfielder is slowly regaining his confidence.

''Billy is looking terrific,'' Merrick said. ''In 11 months he's played just two half games and the second one was so much better than the first.

"He's not ready for a full game, but I'd say he will be in the squad for sure. We need him back at his best soon.''

Celeski will have to battle with Leigh Broxham and Grant Brebner to regain his spot in the centre of midfield, but the Beijing Olyroo claims he'll just be happy to get back on the park.

"I will play anywhere I'm asked, but I really want to be in the middle, pulling the strings and orchestrating things," he said. "But more than anything I need to get out there and be a part of it.

"I think it's going to take time to get back to where I was.

"I do feel a little bit slower but my reading on the game is coming back and I am getting more confidence with the knee in twisting and turning and tackling."

Following a rollercoaster ride during recovery, Celeski can now see the light at the end of the tunnel and also has an eye on an Asian Cup berth having been capped during qualifying.

"It gives you something to drive for, a reason to push yourself," he said. "I'd love to be part of that squad and I think I'm still good enough."
