MELBOURNE Victory midfielder Billy Celeski is expecting a “tough game” against Brisbane Roar at AAMI Park with both teams in the hunt for all three points, but for very different reasons.
Ange Postecoglou’s men are chasing a breakaway of Adelaide United and Central Coast Mariners at the top of the league ladder.
While the defending champs have suffered a horror start to their campaign and are languishing at the bottom of the table with last-placed Sydney FC.
With both teams coming off a loss last week, Celeski said there will be no shortage of motivation out on the park.
“We all know what (Brisbane) are capable of and on their day they obviously play some really exciting football,” he said.
“With teams like that I don’t think there’s any good time to meet them. It’s going to be a tough game for both teams.
“We’re at different stages of our season – and three points are vital for both of us.
“We need to keep us in touch with the top two and obviously for Brisbane they need to get their season back on track. It’s a really important game for both teams.”
The home side will be boosted in their quest for the win by the return of Socceroos Archie Thompson and Mark Milligan, while Adama Traore is back from injury.
One thing that won’t be uppermost in the minds of the Victory players is the 5-0 humiliation they received at the hands of Roar back in round two.
Celeski said his team-mates had shrugged off the early season disaster against Postecoglou’s former team and were intent on the “here and now”.
If anything, it is last week’s 4-2 defeat to arch rivals Adelaide United that should provide the added spur needed to get over the top of the visitors.
The result underlined Victory’s continuing defensive frailties, leaking an average of two goals a game, but the midfielder said the team was learning from their mistakes.
“There’s no hiding the fact that we were all really disappointed with that result – especially how we conceded the goals,” the 27-year-old said.
“We made some bad judgements and decisions in defence and it cost us.
“We’ve been working really hard on defence and our defensive shape and what’s expected of us.
“We’ve had a look at the videos and we’ve got to try and make sure that doesn’t happen again.”
Celeski himself is enjoying an extended run in the team – starting the last seven matches – after enduring a couple of injury interrupted seasons.
“At round one I wasn’t quite ready I still had a bit of a hammy situation and obviously that’s why I had to start a bit slow but since I’ve been in the eleven and I’ve really enjoyed it,” he said.
“It’s just a matter of continuing that and making sure I can keep getting 90 minutes under my belt.
“Certainly it’s been disappointing and frustrating for me personally – I’ve had a pretty interrupted last couple of seasons through injury.
“It was difficult to stay in the right frame of mind and all that sort of stuff. But it’s just one of those things where keep believing in what you’re doing and eventually I knew things would turn for me.”
