MANCHESTER City's pursuit of Aston Villa's James Milner threatens to continue their remarkable recent spending. Here, Press Association Sport reviews their major signings since last summer.
Roque Santa Cruz (£17.5million)
Paraguay star lured from Blackburn last summer but managed just four goals in all competitions.
Gareth Barry (£12million)
Showed why City and Liverpool tried so hard to sign him and why Aston Villa wanted to keep him during an influential season. Injury late in the season badly affected England's World Cup planning.
Carlos Tevez (free)
One of the best signings of last year, the Argentinian was outstanding as City pushed on different fronts, scoring 29 goals overall.
Emmanuel Adebayor (£25million)
Added to City's attacking threat after an acrimonious move from Arsenal. A modest success with 14 goals in what proved an emotional season personally.
Kolo Toure (£16million)
Failed to convince in his first season at Eastlands and Arsenal will feel they got the best of the player's move by scooping such a fee.
Joleon Lescott (£22million)
Another costly acquisition who failed to live up to his huge price. Still a competent performer but not yet worth the considerable hassle the club went to to prise him from Everton.
Patrick Vieira (free)
Past his best but adding his experience and know-how to the squad, as well as increasing competition for places, on a free transfer may not prove bad business.
Adam Johnson (£7million)
Winger who rose to the challenge after his move from Middlesbrough in January and almost forced his way into the England World Cup reckoning.
Jerome Boateng (£10.5million)
After the German's performances in the World Cup, this fee may yet prove a snip. Defensively solid and cool under pressure, Boateng has the versatility to play across the back line.
David Silva (undisclosed)
Winger or forward who will add to City's attacking riches, although competition for places will be considerable. Not cheap with reports suggesting a fee of around £29million.
Yaya Toure (undisclosed)
Champions League winner who should add authority in midfield but, again, if reports of a £24million fee are correct, he has a lot to live up to.
