Ahead of last season, much of the pre-season spotlight and hype surrounded the capture of Robbie Fowler.

This year, it has been less about one name, rather more about individual clubs working hard to refresh their squads with a blend of home-grown and foreign recruits.

As he prepares to lead his team into their first A-League battle against Central Coast Mariners tonight, Colosimo won't have to rely on players well past their prime and simply looking for a last pay day in the sunshine.

"Look at Alex Terra, he's 26 or 27, still young in football terms," he told au.fourfourtwo.com. "Rutger Worm is 23 or 24, that's very, very young for a foreign player to come here. And that's just our club.

"There might not be what people see as one standout but these guys are standouts in their own right. Go and do your homework on these guys and you'll see what they've done."

Not that age is everything. Colosimo is delighted to have at least one member of the over 30s club in the side.

"Ask any player who has played with the Socceroos in the last 15 years to name their top three players and Josip Skoko will be one of them more times than not," he added.

"These guys are going to improve the league and I'm only looking at our team."
