Professional Footballers Union recently held its annual general meeting in Sydney and contract security was the burning issue.

The season so far has seen headlines surrounding clubs' uncertain futures and how that would impact on players.

Last season, the contract situation at North Queensland Fury was condemned, especially by the PFA.

Gold Coast United's Joel Porter spoke of the importance of contract security for players.

"The number one factor in my decision to leave a European career and return to the A-League was a safe and secure lifestyle for me and my family," Porter told the PFA's official website.

"I think the standard of play in the A-League has continually developed since the inaugural season and if we want to continue this trend we need to retain our best and attract other top Australian and foreign players.

"We can only do this if we get the fundamentals right, and contract security is without doubt fundamental. It was evident that everyone at the AGM shared this same view."

The PFA is currently in negotiations with the FFA over a new collective bargaining agreement.

The AGM also saw Brisbane Roar's Shane Stefanutto and Adelaide United's Travis Dodd elected to the PFA Executive.
