Following an early goal from Danish defender Mathias Jorgensen and equaliser from Mario Mandzukic, the game headed into extra-time with the scores locked at 1-1.

After impressing in the group stages, this hadn't been a vintage performance from Croatia's so-called 'golden generation', but with four minutes remaining their talisman Luka Modric had the chance to win it from the penalty spot.

His effort was saved by goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, sending the match to a penalty shootout.

However, despite Schmeichel's heroics, which saw him save another two spot kicks, it was his counterpart, Danijel Subasic, who denied three Danish players to send Croatia through to the last eight.

Was a handful in the first half but dropped deeper after half-time.

Linked up well with his full-backs early on, switching flanks. Like Perisic, he faded as the match went on.

Instinctive finish leveled the scores after four minutes, however he was an isolated figure for most of the second half.
