England defender Nedum Onuoha was targeted by Serbia fans during the Group B clash in Nijmegen, with the public announcement made just before the half-hour mark when play was still going on.

"We will not tolerate your racist chants," the announcer said just before the half-hour mark. "Please stop or leave the stadium."

England's substitutes rallied around Onuoha at the half-time whistle as the Manchester City defender walked towards the tunnel.

It was the second unpleasant incident of England's campaign after Germany's Aaron Hunt was accused of racially abusing Micah Richards and Anton Ferdinand during the qualifying play-off in Leverkusen.

Hunt eventually had his two-game ban for gross unsporting conduct overturned by UEFA.

UEFA have previously been criticised for not taking appropriate action against racism, including after England's friendly in Spain in 2004 when black players were abused.

"We are committed to football being an experience for all," they said in a separate announcement at the interval in Nijmegen.

"Racist, religious or other forms of discrimination have no place in football."
