The Blues slumped to a 3-0 defeat at Manchester United yesterday that leaves them four points adrift of table-toppers Liverpool and only one in front of Sir Alex Ferguson's men, who have two games in hand.

A whispering campaign against the Brazilian is starting to gain momentum and the fact Jose Mourinho was at Old Trafford yesterday only fuelled comparison with what has gone before.

Scolari insists he takes full responsibility and acknowledged Chelsea must improve quickly.

"We are not playing well enough to win any tournament at present," he said.

"The title has not been won or lost. We have another 17 matches to play yet, so who knows what will happen.

"But if we play three or four more matches like this one we will not win anything.

"Now we must think about the future. We need to be men and improve, not feel as though we have lost everything. I am not that type of person and I don't think my players are either."

Should Chelsea lose Wednesday's FA Cup replay at Southend, Scolari really will be in trouble.

Positives to take out of yesterday's contest were few, with Didier Drogba among those turning in a pitiful performance, especially in the second-half when Chelsea capitulated completely.

It was a surprise therefore to hear Scolari claim he is happy with his present squad, not that he was going to get any reinforcements anyway despite the £10million sale of Wayne Bridge to Manchester City.

"We don't need more players," he said. "I don't think they will arrive and I don't want them anyway. This is my squad and I will improve them."

Scolari claimed not to have heard the disgraceful chants at Cristiano Ronaldo from the visiting section following the winger's car crash on Thursday.

He was more expansive when the subject turned to Mourinho, insisting the Inter Milan manager's presence was not putting adding pressure on him.

"There is no pressure," he said.

"Mourinho came here to watch Manchester United for the Champions League match next month. That is normal.

"He is an intelligent man. He didn't come to tell me he loves me."
