The midfielder, who has also represented Barcelona, Juventus, Tottenham, Internazionale and AC Milan in a glittering career, made the announcement after seeing Ajax fail to wrest the Eredivisie title from PSV Eindhoven on the final day of the season.

The 35-year-old will play a role in Ajax's end-of-season Champions League play-off campaign before deciding on his next move, which - whether he retires or not - looks certain to be away from the Amsterdam ArenA.

"It is more than likely," said Davids when asked by reporters if he would call it a day at the end of the current campaign. "I'm 98% sure."

He added: "If I do continue, it won't be at Ajax."

Davids saw his side demolish Heracles Almelo 5-1 in the last game of the regular season but it proved academic as they were beaten to the title by PSV for the fourth year in a row.

Davids ended his Holland career three years ago after winning 74 caps.
