Luke DeVere has praised the A-League for forming a partnership with Australian Defence Force support organisation Mates4Mates, which will see Brisbane Roar take on Adelaide United on ANZAC Day.
It's the first time an ANZAC Day A-League match has been held in Queensland, with fans attending the clash encouraged to donate to Mates4Mates, which provides "life-changing" support for ADF personnel suffering from psychological trauma.
It's an opportunity Devere believes the A-League has been relatively slow to take up on, at least in comparison to the AFL, whose annual ANZAC Day clash is one of the largest single-day sporting events of the year.
"The AFL do it particularly well, it's an opportunity for the A-League," DeVere said.
"Anytime a big organisation can raise awareness for Anzac Day or MatesForMates it's very good.
"It's a huge honour for the Roar to be given this game this year. Hopefully it's something that the A-League can look at in the future, scheduling more fixtures around this day and days like it.
"It's a great opportunity for people to support good causes and remember people who have sacrificed a lot."
Whether DeVere will play in the match himself is slightly less certain. While the defender is optimistic after suffering an injury in Brisbane's duck-breaking victory over Sydney FC, he is merely one in a growing list of injury-plagued Roar footballers.
"The club's in the situation it's in and the team's fighting for every game, but hopefully we get a good crowd and support and hopefully everyone can benefit from it," DeVere said.
"I pulled up alright, hopefully I'm back out on the paddock sometime soon. We'll see how the next few days pan out, give it a few days to settle."
While DeVere believes the win gave his Roar side renewed confidence, it also took its toll. Former Brisbane captain, Jack Hingert, was ruled out for at least the rest of the season after rupturing his ACL.
"It's always sad and unfortunate when a player gets a signficant injury," DeVere continued.
"Jack's a fantastic professional who knows how to look after himself, I'm sure we'll see him back on the pitch sooner rather than later."
Adding insult to injury, star goalkeeper Jamie Young was also given a three-game suspension.
"Everyone in the team is behind Jamie Young, we don't know what's going to happen but we all hope for the best for him," DeVere said.
"Jamie's a fantastic goalkeeper and a fantastic person - he's got a great track record.
"He's a great player for the club, but ultimately Brendan White did a fantastic job on his starting debut, he pulled us out of the fire on a few occasions, so we're fine in the goalkeeping stocks.
"It's a fantastic opportunity, the team has been stretched at times and people have stepped in and done a fantastic job. Isaak Powell gets thrown in on the 15th minute and has a fantastic game on debut - no matter who goes out, we'll back them.
"We've been in great positions to get a good result but we've slipped on a banana skin and shot ourselves in the foot.
"To get that confidence that we can go out and beat a team like Sydney, there's no reason why we can't beat anyone."
