ADELAIDE United striker Bruce Djite will undergo an MRI scan tomorrow to find out the extent of the ankle injury he suffered in the second half of the draw with Perth Glory.
Djite suffered the injury in the 66th minute of the match in a challenge with Simon Colosimo.
The Perth Glory captain making clean contact with the ball but causing Djite’s ankle to twist awkwardly in the process.
Djite, currently the joint top scorer in the A-League, was meant to fly out for camp with his Qantas Australian Under 23 team mates today but instead was flying back to Adelaide with United’s squad, effectively ruling him out of the Olympic qualifier in Beirut on October 17.
The 20 year old was on crutches when he touched down at Adelaide Airport before heading straight to an appointment with the club doctor to assess the damage to his ankle.
The prognosis from the appointment was that Djite has possible ligament damage and could be out for up to four weeks, however it will not be confirmed until after the MRI scan.
“It’s a big disappointment. Things have been going pretty well for me and obviously I’ll miss the Olyroos game against Lebanon so I’m pretty disappointed,” Djite said.
“I didn’t feel anything snap or anything crack but I did feel a severe pain as the tackle happened and as I got up to try and walk it felt pretty painful. I tried to come back on but there was no chance.”
Up until yesterday’s game, Djite had scored four goals in five appearances this season and has been continually providing a lone hand up front with injuries to fellow Reds strikers Paul Agostino and Dez Giraldi.
It is a frustrating setback for the Washington-born striker, who was also on target in the 2007 Pre-Season Cup, finding the net on three occasions.
“It’s extremely frustrating, I was feeling as fit as I’ve ever been," he said.
"I had a really good pre season so I was really starting to feel the benefits of that but it’s a setback. Hopefully it’s not too bad and I will be back in a week or two.”.
With Agostino still under an injury cloud, Nathan Burns away with the Olyroos and Giraldi only just returning from injury and short on game time, Djite’s absence leaves United with a hole to fill up front.
But he is confident The Reds can produce enough firepower to get over Melbourne Victory on Friday night.
“We’ve got great depth in the team and I don’t think it will be a problem,” Djite added.
