Donadoni's 23-man selection has been a matter of intense debate in Italy after the tactician handed a call-up to controversial striker Antonio Cassano and omitted the experienced Filippo Inzaghi.

The world champions also have Juventus veteran Alessandro Del Piero in their ranks, and Donadoni concedes the versatility of his forward line - that also includes the likes of Antonio Di Natale, Fabio Quagliarella and Luca Toni - will be key to how they approach matches.

He said: "We are trying out various options: a three-man defence; two supporting players behind one forward; one supporting player behind two forwards...

"What really makes me happy is that the players are willing to try the ideas.

"I am convinced that one of our strong points will be our versatility."

Friday's match in Florence could give some indication as to how Italy will line up in their opening Euro 2008 game against Holland on June 9, and Donadoni hinted that both Cassano and Del Piero could be in the starting XI.

"I have not decided anything yet but with a three-man attack I definitely see Del Piero on the left and Cassano on the right.

"In any case, we will see. Even today [Wednesday] I will try out things that we might just test in the match against Belgium."

Donadoni also played down fears over the temperament of Cassano ahead of an important period for the national side.

"He has been behaving as I expected him to and as the entire group has been behaving," Donadoni said.

"I do not care how he behaves with me - what matters is how he behaves with the group."

Donadoni refused to be drawn on the progression of his squad only a few days into their training camp in Coverciano.

"It is too early to make any evaluations," Donadoni added on www.figc.it.

"The test against Belgium will be important from a mental point of view and not a physical one, since after only five days of work we cannot ask too much and perhaps the workload will have an effect."

Italy also face Romania and France in Euro 2008 Group C.

Belgium coach Rene Vandereycken is treating the match in Florence as an opportunity to blood some youth as he seeks to lift the country after their failed Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.

Vandereycken has his sights set on the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, which get under way later this year, and has named a youthful squad for Friday's game.

AZ Alkmaar's Sebastien Pocognoli is the only newcomer to the squad, which includes eight players who will represent the country at the Beijing Olympics in August.

Belgium have been drawn in Group Five for the European Zone World Cup qualification campaign. Their opening game is at home to Estonia on September 6.
