Andy Najar had given the rock-bottom visitors the lead with half an hour to go and they were just nine minutes from victory when United States international Donovan levelled.

Galaxy were not to be satisfied with a point and Donovan struck for a stunning winner four minutes from time for the side to stay three points ahead of Red Bull New York.

There was a shock at Columbus as Blaise Nkufo hit a hat-trick as Eastern Conference leaders Crew were beaten 4-0 by Seattle Sounders.

Nkufo scored in the fifth and 40th minute and the game was all but over a minute later when Nathan Sturgis converted a penalty.

Nkufo then completed his hat-trick with 15 minutes left.
