LOS Angeles Galaxy captain Landon Donovan was today named Major League Soccer's player of the month for July.
The United States striker won the media vote following a month in which he led the Galaxy on an unbeaten five-game run which lifted Bruce Arena's side to third place in the MLS western conference.
Donovan, last season's MLS leading scorer, also found the net twice in July, taking his tally for the season to eight, and the American was credited with one assist.
During 2008 he totalled 20 goals to win the league's Gold Boot award and his eight this campaign have moved him to sixth all-time among MLS goalscorers with 92 in total from 197 MLS appearances.
Donovan, who was also involved in an off-field spat with returning team-mate David Beckham during July following comments he made questioning the Englishman's commitment to the Galaxy, will next lead his side out on Saturday in a friendly against European champions Barcelona at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena in front of an expected 85,000 crowd.
