ADELAIDE United bound midfielder Zenon Caravella says uncertainty over Gold Coast United’s future forced his hand and contributed to his move to Hindmarsh Stadium for next season.
The midfielder, who turns 28 later this month, was one of a number of Gold Coast players who signed elsewhere during the season.
Caravella said growing speculation over the club's future under owner Clive Palmer forced him to take the opportunity offered by the Reds.
"It is difficult when there are question marks over the club," he told the Gold Coast Bulletin.
"As a player it is only a very short career so you have some tough decisions to make sometimes and you do have to look after yourself and your family."
The North Queensland product said, as far as he was aware, the club was good to go for at least another two years.
He dismissed rumours of disharmony in the group and said he was happy Gold Coast improved on their first-up effort of last season.
"We are a little bit disappointed but if you look back over the season, we improved on last year and that is fantastic," Caravella said.
"These past few weeks have been unreal. To go two steps further than last year is a great feeling."
The outgoing midfielder spoke highly of the club and wished United all the best for next season.
