MELBOURNE Heart coach John van 't Schip and skipper Simon Colosimo admitted Friday night's 1-1 draw with Central Coast summed up their season as they couldn't find their cutting edge.
The draw with the Mariners leaves Heart in seventh on 34 points with one game to play and needing a miracle to make the finals, with sixth-placed Wellington a point ahead of them and with three games to play.
Heart has played good football at times this season, but only managed 30 goals in 29 games and van 't Schip said finding the back of the net was a recurring problem.
"It's not one game, it's the whole season. The whole season you're coming up short," he said.
"That's what you have to look at and analyse and work on for next year."
Colosimo added: "We created a lot of chances, played some good football but that basically sums up our season that 90 minutes."
"Just when we're in the position to grab hold of a game we let ourselves down."
Van 't Schip added: "After opening the scoring, to then concede a goal soon after meant we had to start all over again which wasn't good for the confidence.
"It's happened often this season and it's something we will have to look at and analyse, but mathematically we are still alive. We just have to hope that all the results go our way and we also defeat Sydney next week."
Central Coast coach Graham Arnold was content with a point but felt his side perhaps deserved more.
"I thought we were the better side. I thought we had the better chances. We looked the more likely team to score," he said.
"It's just a little bit disappointing in the first-half in transition when we won the ball, we didn't keep it for one or two passes afterwards and that's what we've done well of late.
"I am very proud of our boys. Brisbane has had a great year, and it has taken a team who has lost one game and gone 22 unbeaten to beat us. Sydney FC last year after 27 games won the league with 48 points, after 27 games we have 51, so it has taken a red hot Brisbane team to beat us.
"I'm extremely proud of the boys, we have got two games to go and we will get on with it and try to seal second spot. One point tonight really helps a lot."
Arnold continued: "It wasn't an easy surface to play on, it was wet and it was fast and I think we did well in the end, I'm happy with a point.
"Mentally it was difficult for the players, they had to warm up three or four times, they kept getting the message that they were going to inspect the pitch at 8.10pm, 8.30pm and 8.50pm so they had to be ready to go out on three different occasions which I feel probably had an impact on players.
"It's not very often the players finish a game at 11pm at night, but we're glad it is out of the way."
Arnold added about striker Matt Simon who injured his right knee: "Probably (out for) a couple of weeks, but the positive with "Simmo" is that he he's a very fit boy and he recovers from injuries very quickly so we'll keep our fingers crossed.
"He'll have a lot of treatment this week and hopefully recover quickly."
Second-placed Central Coast are four points clear of third-placed Adelaide with both sides having two games to play.
The Mariners travel to Gold Coast United in midweek.
