MELBOURNE Victory caretaker boss Mehmet Durakovic says he felt his side deserved a penalty in their 1-1 draw with Gamba Osaka but was still proud of his team for an improved performance.
Victory had two shouts for spotkicks during the contest, one in the first-half for handball, while the latter was in the second stanza when Isaka Cernak went down under pressure from the Gamba keeper.
Durakovic told Fox Sports on first glance he felt both warranted spotkicks.
“We'd have to see the replay (for the Cernak incident) to be fair but I thought it was a penalty," Durakovic said.
"In the first-half there was one too. But when these things don't go your way, they don't go your way and I'm proud of the boys."
The caretaker boss added he was disappointed not to take all three points from the game, leaving Victory in last spot in the group and needing to win away to Jeju United next week to have any hope of progressing.
“Yes I'm disappointed considering we played well,” Durakovic said.
“We knew how they would play, we had a structure and we stuck to it. We created a lot of chances but unfortunately we didn't score a second goal.”
When asked why he didn't make a substitution into late in the contest, Durakovic said he didn't feel the need for change despite his players appearing to fatigue in the second half.
“I thought everybody really played well and we didn't want to change the structure,” he said.
Durakovic also praised outgoing club stalwart Kevin Muscat labelling his performance 'phenomenal'.
