Galekovic was named as an Pim Verbeek's emergency fourth keeper and will travel to South Africa and train with the Socceroos until the day before Australia's opening match of the World Cup against Germany in Durban on June 13.

Verbeek picked Brad Jones of Middlesbrough and Adam Federici of Reading, who is uncapped at senior level, as Mark Schwarzer's understudies.

The double Aurelio Vidmar Medal winner pulled off a number of stunning saves in the defeat as United bowed out of the AFC Champions League in a dramatic 3-2 extra time loss to Korean side Jenobuk Motors.

Vidmar applauded the dual A-League keeper of year saying Galekovic had been a priceless acquisition since joining the Reds from Melbourne Victory in 2007.

"Yes. Yes he is (the best keeper in Asia)," said Vidmar at United's 'mad Thursday' end of season celebration.

"I thought our defence was very good last night and when they were beaten Eugene was there to do his job. He's been in tremendous form for two years and he's been a tremendous servant for our club.

"I wouldn't doubt that he is one of the best keepers in Asia, absolutely."

Vidmar said Galekovic did all he could have done to secure a spot in the Socceroos.

But the Reds coach conceded a busier playing schedule for the UK-based Jones and Federici compared to United's one match a fortnight in the ACL over the last four months, was a factor in Verbeek's decision.

"I feel gutted for him because I don't know what else he could have done," he said. "He's been super consistent for two years and unfortunately he's the fourth keeper.

"But once again, Pim's had to make a decision, and that's what he feels so you have to respect that. That's the way it is in football.

"I feel really gutted for Eugene because I thought he should have been there."

Vidmar said overseas players shouldn't always be held in higher regard than in-form A-League players.

"Once again, that's opinion," he said. "You still have to be between the sticks and do your job and he's done his job superbly well throughout this whole campaign, throughout the last two seasons really, for us.

"I feel he's quite unlucky but once again someone has to make a decision."
