Former Paraguay international Aldo Paredes is recovering in hospital after being shot in the stomach by thieves who tried to steal his car in Buenos Aires.
Paredes' Toyota Hilux was intercepted by a Ford Focus with three people inside who then tried to steal the player's car. One of thieves shot Paredes in the stomach as he tried to escape.
The former Boca Juniors and San Lorenzo defender, 35, was rushed to Florencio Varela Hospital and then Mitre private-hospital.
Paredes, who is currently playing at Second Division side Almagro in Argentina, underwent surgery and is in a stable condition, according to reports.
Paredes' agent Gustavo Vernet said: "Apparently, he had been followed since he left the Hilton Hotel or somewhere in the surrounding area.
"When he realised he was being followed, he tried to escape and when he thought he was successful, he again came across these people.
"He wanted to give the car to them, but they were apparently drugged or drunk and the first thing they did was to shoot him."
Mitre hospital doctor Eduardo Andreachio said the player will stay in Intensive Care for the next two days.
He said: "We have to wait for 48 hours. He is fine. He only has some pain in the affected area."
