EXCLUSIVE: Former Adelaide United defender Kristian Rees is poised to move to the Chinese Super League.
Two clubs have expressed strong interest in signing the 27-year-old ahead of the 2008 CSL which begins its pre-season in December.
Rees is eager to kick-start his career after the Reds released him as well as Adam Van Dommelle and Aaron Goulding in a purge following the club's group stage exit from the Asian Champions League.
“It's exciting to have an opportunity in an excellent league,” Rees told au.fourfourtwo.com. “We played against a top Chinese Super League side in the ACL and they did very well.
“I hope it works out because I believe at 27 I've still plenty to offer at a high level.”
Rees played for United in both its games against China's Shandong Luneng in the Asian Champions League.
Chinese sides are not generally known for their aerial defensive strength, so Rees' move on paper may be a good fit.
A former NSL player with Adelaide City, Rees is currently playing under former Socceroo Peter Ollerton at Whittlesea Zebras in the Victorian Foxtel Cup.
Rees' arrival coincided with an upsurge in form which has seen the Zebras reach the Victorian grand final.
The side was struggling but went on a run losing only twice in 11 games after the strapping defender arrived at the club
The Zebras' opponents will be decided this weekend when the Knights and Lions play-off for a shot against Whittlesea next weekend at Bob Jane stadium.
“When I arrived, the side maybe needed some direction and organising. We have some raw talent and real pace though in guys like Hamlet Armenian and Tex Apostolikas," added Rees.
Rees intends to return home to Adelaide after the grand final and maintain his fitness in the lead up to what he hopes will be a move back into a top Asian league.
This season, Socceroo Ryan Griffiths played in the CSL with Liaoning FC.
