NORTH Queensland Fury squad have started pre-season training 'excited' by the coming new season - and believe they can prove their detractors wrong again.
The glitz and glamour of a Robbie Fowler signing is not present this season, but the building squad is ready for the battle as Fury hit the training track officially for the first time on Monday, putting a tumultuous off-season behind them.
Assistant coach Stuart McLaren said it was time for the club to move forward.
"Today is the new dawn of the new Fury in the terms of the football, so the lads are excited and we're just excited to get out there and get cracking," McLaren told the Townsville Bulletin.
"Last year is last year, it's over and done with, it's forgotten about. We won't be speaking about it or thinking about it."
He believes there is much to come from Fury, who narrowly missed out on a finals spot last season.
"The players are very excited, the coaching and support staff are delighted to get to this point and we have given the boys a clear indication of what is expected from here on in," McLaren added.
McLaren has taken charge in the interim while the search for a new head coach continues but he says the announcement is not too far away.
"I believe the club's very close to making that appointment and when it's done and dusted it'll be made public. So it's exciting times both on and off the park," the former Queensland Roar defender said.
Ayr-born Fury goalkeeper Matt Ham is confident Fury will respond positively to any doubts aimed at the club.
"If anyone writes you off it makes you work harder, you want to put a bit more in ... we just have to worry about our little zone and not worry about outside influences," Ham said.
"When you're in pre-season, it galvanises the group, but I can guarantee that because it is more of a community-based team that we are going to have quite a strong bond, just like they did last year."
Ham and his teammates are gearing up for their opening clash against Fowler's Perth on August 6.
He added: "All the boys are pumped to finally be getting it going."
