FA CUP third-round day proved to be a miserable one for the north east as Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough were all dumped out by lower league opposition.
Newcastle suffered the most stunning reverse of the trio as they were comprehensively beaten 3-1 by League Two Stevenage.
A Mike Williamson own goal and a wonderful strike from Michael Bostwick put the home side in control before the Magpies had Cheik Tiote sent off for a wild lunge on Jon Ashton.
Joey Barton pulled a goal back in stoppage time but Peter Winn slotted home the clincher for Stevenage to give their fans memories to even exceed those of their famous draw against the same opponents in 1998.
Sunderland, meanwhile, were beaten 2-1 by Notts County. Craig Westcarr and Lee Hughes got the goals for the visitors before Darren Bent pulled one back from the spot for the hosts as Black Cats boss Steve Bruce paid the price for resting several first-team regulars.
And a woeful day for the region was completed when Middlesbrough were dumped out by League Two side Burton Albion and Hartlepool lost 4-1 at Watford.
Boro had led through a Gary O'Neil goal but two Shaun Harrad goals in the last eight minutes sealed a 2-1 win for the home side.
West Brom and Blackpool were the two other Premier League casualties on the day.
West Brom were sunk by Reading as the in-form Shane Long grabbed the only goal of the game before the Baggies had Jonas Olsson sent off, while the Seasiders lost 2-0 to Southampton as Lee Barnard and Guly got the goals.
Arsenal avoided an embarrassing home defeat to Leeds in the day's early kick-off as Cesc Fabregas' late penalty levelled matters after Robert Snodgrass had put Leeds ahead from the spot in the 54th minute.
Mick McCarthy's Wolves could not follow up their midweek league win over Chelsea as Billy Sharp and James Hayter scored to hold them to a 2-2 draw against Doncaster at the Keepmoat Stadium. Nenad Milijas and Stephen Hunt, from a penalty, responded for the visitors, who had George Elokobi dismissed.
Kyle Walker, Marc Albrighton and Stiliyan Petrov were on target for Aston Villa in a 3-1 win at Sheffield United despite the dismissal of Ashley Young, while Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander spared Bolton's blushes with a late goals in a 2-0 win against non-league York.
Stoke face an away trip for a replay after a 1-1 draw with Cardiff. Michael Chopra gave the Welsh side an early lead but Tuncay Sanli responded for the Potters.
Everton were comfortable 5-1 winners at Championship Scunthorpe as Louis Saha, Jermaine Beckford, Seamus Coleman, Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines grabbed the goals, Michael Collins responding for the hosts at Glanford Park.
Fulham also enjoyed a comfortable victory as they beat League One Peterborough 6-2. Diomansy Kamara helped himself to a hat-trick as Kelvin Etuhu, Zoltan Gera and Jonathan Greening also got on the scoresheet.
Wigan won 3-2 at Hull with Mohamed Diame scoring two and youngster Callum McManaman grabbing his first senior goal, Nick Barmby's brace for Hull proving in vain.
Jonathan Spector and Frederic Piquionne helped West Ham beat Barnsley 2-0 and Matt Derbyshire bagged a brace in Birmingham's 4-1 win at Millwall.
Coventry were 2-1 winners over Crystal Palace while Luke Chambers grabbed a late winner to help Nottingham Forest beat Preston by the same margin.
Huddersfield claimed a straightforward 2-0 success against Dover and League Two Torquay upset League One Carlisle 1-0.
